Hugs are an integral part of being a human. Humans need physical connection, and hugging is powerful medicine. In addition to making us feel better emotionally, hugs create physical benefits. When the little boy in the video below ran out to the driveway for just one more hug, he was conveying a need. As adults, we sometimes forget about hugs and miss out on these side effects. We explored some of the benefits of hugging.
Stress Reduction: Hugging reduces the level of a hormone our bodies produce called cortisol. When we reduce our cortisol levels naturally with a hug or two, it also helps with sleeping problems, skin issues, weight control, lower immunity levels, and more!
Improves Heart Health: Hugging and hand-holding are simple types of human contact that can lower blood pressure, which reduces our risk of stroke, heart disease, and heart attacks.
Helps with Relationships: Any type of relationship can benefit from hugging. Hugging our friends seals the bond we have. Hugging a spouse or partner causes our bodies to release specific hormones (oxytocin) that help us feel closer to each other.
Pain Reduction: Our bodies produce natural pain-relieving hormones (endorphins). The action and response (hormone production) improves circulation and creates a natural barrier to pain.
Improves Self-Esteem: All humans crave physical touch and reassurance of love from other humans. When we get hugs, they can reduce feelings of despair and help us feel safe and loved, offering a sense of belonging.
As you go about your day, remember this young boy running out to catch his dad for “just one more hug.” When you need an emotional pick-me-up, get a hug. If you see a friend with a frown, give them a hug. Being kind, especially in a tough world, can benefit you in many ways. The world definitely needs more kindness and more hugs!
